‘Highly emotional - Reviving Her has revealed so many untouched emotions’

A powerful new dance-theatre show about young, Northern female empowerment and identity.

REVIVING HER

A timely and vital work, Reviving Her explores themes of female safety, identity and empowerment.

Stumbling upon a cavernous space, we meet 6 women.

Disorientated and confused, they try to make sense of the space they’ve found themselves in. Something is different. What was familiar now feels strange. Left in their solitude, they embark on a reflective and intimate journey, visiting their past, present and future selves.

Told in the brave, fearless and honest voices of young women from Yorkshire, REVIVING HER is a call to arms; a battle cry for a world where women can resurrect their authentic selves. To a place of love, acceptance and strength.

What does it mean to be a young woman in today’s society?

  • Birthed from Co-Artistic Director Anna’s personal experiences, the project sifts through the layers of the generational and societal trauma of living under the male gaze.

Reviving Her aims for it’s audiences and participants to gain a better understanding of what it means to be a young woman in today’s society, and to reconnect them with their authentic self found buried under the weight of patriarchal and capitalist structures.

As standard with Northern Rascals’ practice, the thematic content of the work is then interrogated and further informed directly by the target audience of the work via tailored outreach. With Reviving Her, this target audience has been defined as young women aged 16-30. This activity includes classes, sharings and workshops with a focus group of young women. With permission, Northern Rascals takes these findings and allows them to shape the creative research conducted in the studio with their highly acclaimed creative team.

‘Reviving Her is full of powerful images, there’s a certain aura of defiance - an enclosed, imprisoned atmosphere vs the freedom and supposed “temptation” of the dancers. There’s an element of vulnerability, but it seems as though each individual is united; equidistant for support and protection. It’s an interesting social commentary on women. Amazing work!’
